Kids Save the Planet is part of Washington Elementary's Green School Initiative which seeks to engage and unite a diverse student body, parents, and teachers to a common cause, as well as to provide opportunities for the broader community to articulate with the school. The guiding principle is that environmental education can empower students to be agents of change in their community?at school, at home, and in their neighborhood.
Based on best practices demonstrated throughout Europe, the Green School Initiative is turning Washington Elementary into a learning laboratory for conservation. The Green Team, composed of students, teachers, parents and other community members, is beginning an environmental audit of the school and will soon be prioritizing material changes in the school. They will also be organizing the school around green education opportunities and events such at the Kids Save the Planet Festival and the Garden Project.
